The Gyeongju City Council in North Gyeongsang Province convened the first plenary session of its 300th extraordinary session on Tuesday, taking up 14 agenda items including proposed ordinances.

Over the seven-day session, three standing committees and a special budget and accounts committee will review 10 ordinance bills, three consent motions and a proposed revision to a fund management plan.

Before the plenary session, four lawmakers delivered five-minute free speeches: Park Jong-woo on building a stronger safety management system for Gyeongju, Choi Jae-pil on securing a stable water supply for the city, Kim Tae-su on establishing year-round safety measures for rural villages, and Lee Kyong-hee on expediting the replacement construction of Gyeongju Bridge.

The council will hold its second plenary session on Monday to vote on the agenda items and close the session.

Council Speaker Im Hwal said severe drought and heat waves in recent weeks have compounded hardships for residents in their daily lives as well as for agriculture and the broader local economy. "We will join forces with relevant agencies to put in place measures that are genuinely needed on the ground," he said.
