Korea Maritime and Ocean University announced Monday that it has been selected as a specialized university under the 2026 Information Security Specialization University Support Project, overseen by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA).

The selection makes the Busan-based university the first in South Korea to establish a maritime-focused cybersecurity education framework targeting seafarers and maritime personnel, with the aim of training hands-on specialists capable of responding to cyberattacks across the shipping, port and shipbuilding industries.

Under the agreement, the university will receive government funding of 2.7 billion won ($1.95 million) — 450 million won per year — over a maximum of six years from 2026 to 2031, along with 540 million won in private-sector contributions at 90 million won annually, bringing total support to 3.24 billion won.

The project will involve the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, Korean Register (KR) and the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering as industry-academia partners in the maritime sector. The university also plans to expand its information security club within the maritime college.
