Yeongwol-gun in Gangwon Province, where mining, cultural industries and tourism are experiencing a revival as sources of advanced materials, has opened a new home for the young talent it hopes will energize the region — a shared residential facility called Sangdong Byeolgwan.
The county held an opening ceremony Monday for the youth village shared housing complex in Sangdong-eup, marking the launch of a new hub aimed at helping young people settle in the area and fostering coexistence between newcomers and local residents.
The facility was built near the Sangdong tungsten mine, which has drawn renewed attention as a source of advanced future materials, as Gangwon Province works to improve conditions for attracting and retaining young talent.
Attendees at the ceremony reviewed the development and operational plans for the shared housing complex and discussed the significance of a space to be shaped together by youth and the local community.
The Sangdong Byeolgwan offers youth-tailored shared housing and community programs designed to support young people from outside the region in settling locally and to promote harmony with existing residents. An agricultural corporation called Batmeong currently operates the facility, running youth stay programs and workcation initiatives.
At the opening ceremony, the head of Batmeong presented plans to revitalize the youth village, after which guests of honor, young residents and community representatives gathered for a plaque unveiling and commemorative photo. Attendees then toured key facilities including a shared kitchen and guest rooms before gathering for refreshments and conversation.
Yeongwol Deputy County Chief Hyeon Jae-ho said he hoped the shared housing complex would help young people from outside the region put down roots and become a space where youth and local residents could mingle. "We will continue to provide support so that young people can find new opportunities in Yeongwol and grow alongside the community," he said.
