South Chungcheong Province athlete tops US Open Wild Card Challenge standings to advance directly to main draw
Lee Young-seo, a tennis player affiliated with South Chungcheong Province and ranked 165th in the WTA singles world rankings, has secured a wild card into the women's singles main draw of the 2026 US Open, officials announced Monday.
Lee clinched the spot after finishing first in the final standings of the US Open Wild Card Challenge women's division — confirmed Aug. 13 local time — with 174 points.
She edged out Caroline Dolehide (122 points) and Elvina Kalieva (120 points) to clear the final hurdle and advance directly to the main draw without going through qualifying.
The US Open Wild Card Challenge awards a main-draw wild card to the American player with the highest combined score from her top three results at W35-level or higher hard-court tournaments held over a four-week period.
Lee has pursued Grand Slam appearances throughout this season, reaching the qualifying final at the Australian Open in January before falling in the first round of qualifying at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Last month she advanced through qualifying at the WTA 250 Prague Open to record her first main-draw win on tour, and earlier this month she claimed her first WTA 125 title at the Warsaw Open in Poland.
That run of form lifted her challenge points enough to secure the top spot in the final standings, earning her a main-draw wild card and her first Grand Slam main-draw appearance in her debut season.
The US Open will set seedings based on rankings as of Monday, with the draw scheduled for Thursday and main-draw play beginning Sunday.
Born in Saipan in 2001, Lee has also competed internationally under the name Carol Young Seo Lee.
She joined Korea Expressway Corporation in 2024 to make her debut on the domestic professional circuit and has been competing under South Chungcheong Province this year.
"We consider it deeply meaningful that one of our province's athletes has reached the main draw of a major tournament," a provincial official said. "We will continue to support our athletes through talent development and systematic backing to raise the profile of South Chungcheong sports, and we look forward to strong results at the National Sports Festival to be held in Jeju in October."
