Seoul's Dobong-gu, led by District Mayor Kim Dong-wook, will host a series of events themed "Diversity and Gender Equality" to mark Gender Equality Week, including a celebrity lecture, a free market, a campaign and an exhibition.
Under the Gender Equality Basic Act and its enforcement decree, Gender Equality Week is observed annually from Sept. 1 through Sept. 7.
In observance of the week, Dobong-gu has prepared five events: a Gender Equality Week ceremony and celebrity lecture by Prof. Choi Jae-cheon, a free market for women creators called "Gachi Market," a 20th-anniversary ceremony and lecture for the Dobong Women's Center, a Gender Equality Week promotional campaign, and a book exhibition on "Diversity and Gender Equality."
The Gender Equality Week ceremony and celebrity lecture will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 3 at Seoninbong Hall on the second floor of the Dobong-gu Office.
At the event, 15 individuals who have contributed to advancing gender equality and strengthening women's rights and safety will receive Gender Equality Awards.
Choi Jae-cheon, a distinguished professor at Ewha Womans University, will then deliver a special lecture titled "In the Age of Women, Men Wear Makeup."
On the same day, from noon to 4 p.m. on the first floor of the Dobong-gu Office, the "Gachi Market" free market for women creators will be open.
Seventeen teams of women creators — including students of the Dobong Women's Center and aspiring entrepreneurs — will sell handcrafted works and other items they made themselves.
The market follows an exhibition of calligraphy, folk painting, photography and essay works by Dobong Women's Center students, running from Monday through Sept. 2 on the first floor of the Dobong-gu Office.
The Dobong Women's Center, marking its 20th anniversary this year, will hold a commemorative ceremony Sept. 4 in the auditorium on the center's second floor.
Following an awards presentation and celebratory performance, a commemorative lecture on "The Outlook and Challenges for Women's Employment in the AI Era" is also planned.
On Sept. 7, a Gender Equality Week promotional campaign will be held at the No. 1 exit of Changdong Station and other locations, together with "Women-Friendly City Supporters," to raise awareness of gender equality and Dobong-gu's women's safety project.
On top of that, the district worked to offer a wide range of programs, including book exhibitions on "Diversity and Gender Equality" at eight district public libraries.
"Dobong-gu will continue working to build a gender-equal society where all residents respect each other's differences and can fully realize their individual potential," District Mayor Kim said.
