A 62-year-old woman in China has given birth to a baby boy, drawing widespread attention.
According to Chinese media, the woman, a resident of Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, delivered a boy weighing 3 kilograms on Friday. Both mother and child were in good health following intensive care by medical staff. "The baby has arrived and is so beautiful — I am truly overjoyed," the mother said.
Medical staff placed the mother under special monitoring throughout her pregnancy given her age. "This is the first time we have had a 62-year-old expectant mother," her attending physicians said, adding that she was designated a high-risk case and given weekly prenatal checkups.
A crisis arose in the late stages of pregnancy when her blood pressure spiked sharply. Doctors admitted her to hospital and monitored her condition closely until delivery.
However, the medical team stressed the risks of pregnancy at an advanced age. "The older the mother, the greater the likelihood of chromosomal abnormalities and the higher the risk of complications during pregnancy," said a physician surnamed Hu.
