Seoul's Dongdaemun-gu will hold a "2026 Gender Equality Week Commemoration Event" at the district office on Sept. 5, marking this year's Gender Equality Week.
Held under the theme "Bridging Differences, Shining Together," the event invites families to reflect on gender equality within family relationships, offering members a chance to understand each other's roles and take part in a range of programs together.
The first half opens with a performance by the Dongdaemun-gu Boys and Girls Choir, followed by the family musical "Our Home Change-up." The production is a children's original musical told through the eyes of an elementary school-age son, depicting the comic mishaps — and growing mutual understanding — that unfold when a mother and father swap their everyday roles.
The second half features performances by a fathers' choir and a women's choir, followed by a formal commemoration ceremony. Eight community members who have contributed to spreading a culture of gender equality will receive commendations from District Mayor Choi Dong-min. Professor Lee Ho-seon will then deliver a special lecture titled "Gender Equality for Me and My Family," covering the importance of gender equality at home and practical ways to apply it in daily life.
Alongside this, a traveling exhibition from the National Museum of Korean Women's History — "Women in History" — will spotlight the lives and achievements of women who made their mark across fields including the independence movement, fine arts and law. Experience programs for family visitors will also be available, including a crime-prevention campaign booth, calligraphy, keycap decorating, face painting and balloon art.
Reservations for the family musical and the special lecture can be made through the online registration menu on the Dongdaemun-gu website. Should seats become available due to no-shows by pre-registered participants, walk-in registration will be offered on the day of the event.
"Gender equality does not begin with grand slogans — it starts with the small act of understanding and respecting each other's perspective within the family," District Mayor Choi said. "I hope this event serves as an opportunity for everyone to think about and practice the values of gender equality in their daily lives."
