Chief Justice Jo Hee-dae arrived at the Supreme Court in Seocho-gu, Seoul, on Wednesday morning.
Jo submitted written nominations to President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday for two candidates to fill a Supreme Court justice seat — Son Bong-gi, 60, a senior judge at the Daegu District Court, and Kim Seong-su, 57, a senior judge at the Seoul High Court — breaking with the established practice of delivering such recommendations in person, sources said.
Cheong Wa Dae and the judiciary have been at odds over the final candidates since January, when a Supreme Court justice nomination committee recommended four names to succeed former Justice Noh Tae-ak.
Jo appears to have proceeded with the written nomination without reaching an agreement with Cheong Wa Dae, ahead of the scheduled retirement of Justice Lee Heung-gu.
