Three sanitation workers were killed Wednesday when a 25-ton dump truck and a 6-ton garbage truck collided in North Gyeongsang Province, police said.
The crash occurred at around 4:03 a.m. at the Dodong intersection in Yeongcheon, according to Yonhap.
Police said the two vehicles were entering the intersection when they collided. The intersection operates on flashing signals from midnight to 5 a.m.
The driver of the dump truck, a man in his 70s, sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.
The three victims — two in their 60s and one in their 40s — were sanitation workers employed by a private contractor handling residential waste collection for Yeongcheon city. They had been collecting garbage daily across five neighborhoods in the city and were on their way to their work site for the early-morning shift when the crash occurred.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage and vehicle dashcam recordings to determine the direction each vehicle was traveling and establish the exact cause of the crash.
