County verifies air-conditioning operation and usage to help elderly residents stay healthy through summer
Hampyeong-gun in South Jeolla Province has inspected operations at senior centers serving as summer cooling shelters, as part of efforts to protect elderly residents from the heat wave.
The county said Wednesday it had been conducting intensive inspections of all 377 senior centers in the area since Aug. 3.
The inspections aimed to verify the operating condition of air-conditioning units and check usage levels at each center, while assessing the health of elderly visitors and identifying any inconveniences they may be experiencing.
Officials checked whether cooling equipment was functioning properly and confirmed how actively the centers were being used. They also advised elderly residents to limit outdoor activities, drink plenty of water and rest in cool spaces, urging them to take precautions against heat-related illness.
"We will carefully look after the senior centers — the heart of community communication — so that elderly residents can rest there safely," county chief Lee Nam-o said. "We will continue to do our best to improve welfare so that our seniors can enjoy a healthy retirement."
