60 works selected under theme 'Daejeon, a City to Stay In'; exhibition runs through Aug. 27 at City Hall
Daejeon City held the awards ceremony for its public design competition Wednesday at the second-floor lobby of City Hall, celebrating works aimed at making the city's spaces more functional and visually appealing.
This year's competition, held under the theme "Daejeon, a City to Stay In," drew 207 teams of university students and members of the general public, who submitted entries across three categories: space, facilities and visual design. A panel of eight experts in architecture, design and urban planning evaluated the submissions on creativity, practicality and overall quality, selecting 60 winning works in total.
The grand prize went to a team from Woosong University — Park Mi-seong, Song Gyu-heon and Kim Sa-rang — for "Oasis Square," a spatial design reimagining the plaza in front of Daejeon Station. The gold prize went to Kim Min-hee, also of Woosong University, for "On Tram — A Tram Worth Riding, a Daejeon Worth Finding," a visual design focused on station signage for Urban Railway Line 2, the city's tram line.
Daejeon Mayor Heo Tae-jeong said the city would work to build a Daejeon where people, nature and culture come together safely, in keeping with the competition's theme. "I hope this competition serves as a stepping stone for participants and an opportunity for citizens to appreciate the value of design," he said.
The winning works will be on display at the second-floor lobby of Daejeon City Hall through Aug. 27. They can also be viewed on the official website of the Daejeon Metropolitan City Public Design Competition.
