Yeongdeungpo-gu District Chief Jo Yu-jin on Friday presented a valor medal to the family of the late Cpl. Ki Yeong-yong, who served his country during the Korean War.
Ki served with the Army's 9th Infantry Division and earned the Hwarang Medal of Military Merit on June 10, 1953, for his battlefield contributions. The chaos of the war, however, prevented him from receiving the decoration in his lifetime, and his family accepted the medal in his place on Friday, 73 years later.
"Though much time has passed, it is deeply meaningful to be able to present the late Cpl. Ki Yeong-yong's valor medal to his family," Jo said. "We will never forget the sacrifice and contributions of those who served, and we will do our utmost to honor veterans and their families."
