GS Engineering & Construction marked the 81st Liberation Day on Friday with a corporate social responsibility initiative to improve the living conditions of independence merit holders, their descendants and veterans' families.
The company held a completion ceremony for the Suwon Patriots and Veterans Home improvement project at the facility in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, with Minister of Patriots and Veterans Kwon O-eul, GS Engineering & Construction CEO Heo Yun-hong and ChildFund Korea Secretary-General Yeo Seung-su in attendance.
The Suwon Patriots and Veterans Home is a welfare facility under the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans that provides elderly care, medical and welfare services to elderly merit holders and veterans' family members with no legal guardians.
Working with Namchon Foundation, the GS Group's public-interest foundation, GS Engineering & Construction created new outdoor walking paths and rest areas on the grounds, complete with trees and landscaping. Funding came from GS Engineering & Construction and Namchon Foundation through ChildFund Korea, while landscaping firm LF D&L carried out the construction work.
The company also donated summer household goods — including bedding, electric fans, health foods and seasonal fruit — to support residents' health during the warmer months. It contributed "upcycling benches" crafted from about 1,000 discarded hard hats collected from construction sites, adding a message of resource recycling and environmental protection.
In addition, GS Engineering & Construction is running employee-participation social contribution activities to mark the spirit of Liberation Day.
The company is sponsoring the "815 Run," a charity running campaign organized by Habitat for Humanity Korea to support housing improvements for descendants of independence merit holders. Employees selected through advance registration will take part in the charity run directly for the first time this year. The initiative aims to broaden awareness of veterans' contributions within the company by linking voluntary employee participation with corporate sponsorship.
"The daily lives we enjoy today are thanks to the courage and sacrifice of those who dedicated themselves to the nation," a GS Engineering & Construction official said. "We will continue to provide practical support so that descendants of independence merit holders and veterans' families can live comfortably and safely, as a company committed to creating better living spaces."
Meanwhile, GS Engineering & Construction posted preliminary consolidated earnings for the second quarter of this year, recording sales of 2.78 trillion won ($1.96 billion), operating profit of 91.4 billion won and new orders of 5.22 trillion won.
