Jessica Bang, a Korean-born Australian golf prodigy, died at 18 while preparing for the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association tour international qualifying tournament.

Bang died Thursday (local time) at Samitivej Ramindra Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, according to Australian outlet 7News and other local media.

She collapsed from a brain hemorrhage in Bangkok on Aug. 1 while preparing for the KLPGA tour international qualifying event. She was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency brain surgery but never regained consciousness, remaining on life support in the intensive care unit until her death.

Born in South Korea, Bang turned professional last November and quickly established herself as one of Australia's most promising young golfers. She is reported to have obtained Australian citizenship after her 18th birthday.

Just three months after turning pro, she won the Southern Highlands Ford NSW Regional Championship in February, carding an 8-under-par 65. Earlier this year she earned the right to compete in her rookie season on both the Women's PGA of Australia tour and the KLPGA circuit, earning her the nickname "Rookie Bang."

The golf world mourned her passing. Golf NSW said it was "deeply saddened" by the news, describing Bang as "a talented golfer with a bright future" who "was loved by many for the kindness she showed both on and off the course."

"We extend our condolences to Jessica's family and friends, and to everyone in the golf community who had the privilege of watching her play," the association added. "She will be greatly missed."

Her family had launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to repatriate Bang while she remained unconscious, but with her passing the proceeds will now go toward covering medical expenses. The campaign raised about A$36,000, equivalent to approximately 35 million won ($24,700).

"Jessica's sense of humor and her bright, vibrant personality will be forever remembered and cherished by all of our family," her family said. "We would like to again express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported Jessica and our family during this incredibly difficult time."
