Yeosu Coast Guard honors Lee Chung-sik for saving all crew members aboard a stricken fishing vessel off Oenaro Island
The Yeosu Maritime Police Station presented a Rescue Honor award Thursday to a civilian who contributed to saving lives at a maritime accident scene, in a ceremony held at the Narodo branch office.
The Rescue Honor recognizes civilians and coast guard officers who risk their lives to save others at maritime accident scenes, and aims to promote a culture of active public participation in lifesaving efforts.
Lee Chung-sik, 52, captain of the vessel Ujinho 2025 and the first-half 2026 Rescue Honor recipient, rushed to the scene of a fishing boat flooding incident off Oenaro Island in Goheung on May 20 and rescued all crew members aboard through swift rescue efforts.
The fishing vessel was capsizing from flooding when he arrived, yet he carried out the rescue operation calmly and prevented any casualties.
"I extend my deepest gratitude to the Rescue Honor recipient, who did not hesitate in a critical moment and stepped forward to save precious lives," Yeosu Coast Guard Chief Myeong Seong-min said. "We will continue to identify and encourage active civilian rescue efforts as we work together with the public to build a safer sea."
