Gyeongju, in North Gyeongsang Province, plans to develop the Najeong-ri area of Gampo-eup into a maritime leisure and tourism hub.
The city will invest 49 billion won ($34.6 million) to build a marine leisure support center, a four-season leisure experience center and a water leisure activity zone in the Najeong-ri area, city officials said Thursday.
The project will also include a seaside walking path called Yongoreum-gil, a diving pool, Manpasikjeok Park and a marine sculpture park.
Gyeongju plans to break ground in October after securing implementation plan approval and public notice, with completion scheduled for December 2028.
The city was selected as the final site for the maritime leisure tourism hub project in July 2023 and received conditional approval from a central government fiscal review of local investment that November.
"The maritime leisure tourism hub project is an important undertaking that will extend Gyeongju's tourism reach to the East Sea coast," Mayor Ju Nak-young said.
