Gwangjin-gu has launched a digital storage media destruction service to prevent personal information and sensitive data left on used devices from being leaked, District Mayor Kim Gyeong-ho announced.
The service physically destroys battery-free storage media — including hard disk drives, solid-state drives and USB drives — using dedicated equipment, ensuring safe disposal. Because data can potentially be recovered from simply discarded storage devices, physical destruction blocks any leakage of personal information or sensitive materials before it can occur.
The service has been available since July 8 and is free to all Gwangjin-gu residents as well as anyone employed at a workplace within the district.
Those wishing to use the service must first apply through the Gwangjin-gu district office website under "Field Information → Resident Lifestyle Information → Storage Media Destruction Service," then bring the device to the Smart Information Division on the 7th floor of the district office.
Walk-in hours are weekdays from 10 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. For further inquiries, contact the Smart Information Division directly. Once a storage device is physically destroyed, any data on it cannot be recovered, so users must back up needed files to a separate device before using the service.
"Digital storage media contain personal information and other important data, so it is crucial to dispose of them safely even after they are no longer in use," Kim said. "We will continue to do our utmost to protect residents' valuable personal information and deliver trustworthy digital administrative services."
