Seoul's Seongbuk-gu district held a watermelon donation ceremony Monday with Line Construction and the Line Culture Foundation, delivering 500 watermelons worth 15 million won ($10,600) to help local residents stay healthy through the summer heat.
Line Culture Foundation Chair Oh Jeong-hwa and other foundation officials attended the ceremony.
The watermelons were distributed to 229 welfare facilities across the district — 177 senior centers, eight comprehensive social welfare centers, five silver welfare centers and 23 children's centers — so that elderly residents and children, who are especially vulnerable to extreme heat, can enjoy a cool and healthy summer.
"We hope the elderly and children can beat the summer heat with watermelons, the season's signature fruit," Oh said. "We plan to continue a range of social contribution activities, including spreading a culture of sharing in the community, supporting the arts and providing scholarships for young people."
Seongbuk-gu District Mayor Lee Seung-ro expressed gratitude to the foundation. "I am deeply grateful to the Line Culture Foundation for this meaningful act of sharing for our residents during the sweltering summer," he said. "We will do our best to deliver not only the watermelons but also the foundation's warm spirit."
Seongbuk-gu said it will continue to strengthen cooperation with private organizations and businesses to spread a culture of sharing and consistently advance welfare projects for residents.
