HD Hyundai Oilbank has developed South Korea's first engine oil dedicated to hydrogen-powered engines and begun supplying it to commercial vehicle manufacturers.

The company announced Tuesday that it has supplied XTeer H2-ICE — a lubricant engineered specifically for hydrogen internal combustion engines — to hydrogen commercial vehicle makers including Tata Daewoo, marking the first such supply in the country.

HD Hyundai Oilbank began developing hydrogen internal combustion engine lubricant technology in 2023 and completed both product development and performance verification using its own proprietary technology last year.

Hydrogen internal combustion engines burn at higher temperatures than conventional engines and can cause accelerated engine wear and oil degradation due to moisture generated during combustion. To address these challenges, HD Hyundai Oilbank independently developed three core technologies: engine protection, moisture control and deposit suppression.

HD Hyundai has been expanding its hydrogen engine and related technology development, with HD Construction Equipment announcing plans to mass-produce hydrogen engines for trucks. In step with that push, HD Hyundai Oilbank is broadening its lubricant portfolio to cover conventional internal combustion engines, hydrogen internal combustion engines and electric vehicles.

"Through our own research and development, we have secured proprietary lubricant technology for hydrogen internal combustion engines and reached the commercialization stage," a company official said. "We will continue to expand high-value lubricant solutions targeting the global market and actively respond to changes in the future mobility landscape."
