GIST selected to build shared AI research infrastructure for universities

The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) announced Thursday it had been selected as the lead institution for the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea's "AI-based university science and technology innovation project."

The project, led by principal investigator Kim Jong-won, dean and director of GIST's Supercomputing Center, was chosen under the category of building a central hub infrastructure for AI-based university science and technology innovation through the integration of AI and science and technology.

The initiative aims to foster a university-centered AI research ecosystem, tackle difficult challenges in science and technology, and strengthen research competitiveness.

GIST plans to receive 75 billion won ($50.4 million) in government funding over eight years through 2034 to build and operate shared AI research infrastructure for universities, providing a common platform on which university researchers can conduct AI-based science and technology research.

GIST will develop a shared high-performance computing and AI infrastructure — known as HPC-AI — designed to meet the demands of science and technology research, and will operate an integrated research platform to make the system easily accessible to researchers.

The platform will bring together ultra-high-performance GPU-based AI research infrastructure, research data and AI model sharing, and collaborative research support across research centers into a single system. Researchers will be able to carry out the entire research and development cycle — from planning and data analysis to AI model development and deployment, and results sharing — on one platform.

Through its Supercomputing Center, GIST will build and operate both an HPC-AI shared infrastructure and a national shared AI supercomputing platform called Dream-AI, overseeing shared computing services on a nationwide scale.
