Gangdong-gu announced Sunday that a suspect in an attempted kidnapping on a street in the district in the early hours of June 29 had been apprehended, thanks to rapid footage analysis by the district's closed-circuit television integrated monitoring center and close coordination with police.

According to Gangdong-gu, a woman in her 20s called 112 at around 2:15 a.m. that day from a street in Cheonho-dong, reporting that a man had tried to kidnap her. The 112 emergency dispatch center requested a review of recorded CCTV footage, and two operators at the Gangdong-gu CCTV integrated monitoring center began monitoring footage from the relevant time and location.

The operators identified footage showing a man following the victim before suddenly grabbing her by the neck and attempting to drag her away, then fleeing. They relayed the suspect's physical description, belongings and escape route to police, who apprehended him at a checkpoint about 20 minutes after the incident.

The Gangdong-gu integrated monitoring center is a 317-square-meter facility on the fifth floor of the Gangdong-gu Office annex in Seongnae 1-dong. It operates around the clock, 365 days a year, and manages a total of 4,962 CCTV cameras across the district, including crime-prevention units.

The Seoul Gangdong Police Station plans to commend the two CCTV monitoring center operators for their contribution to the suspect's arrest.

Gangdong-gu Mayor Lee Su-hee said the district would continue to prevent crime through proactive and professional CCTV monitoring, and would keep expanding its AI-assisted selective monitoring system to make Gangdong-gu safer around the clock.
