The Korea Meteorological Administration issued a tropical night advisory for Gyeongsan, Chilgok-gun and Uiseong-gun in North Gyeongsang Province at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, effective immediately.

The weather agency overhauled its heat alert system this year for the first time in 18 years, introducing a major heat wave warning and a tropical night advisory. The new system has been in operation since June. Wednesday's advisory is the first issued under the new regime.

The advisory is triggered when the daily maximum perceived temperature is forecast to reach 33 degrees Celsius or higher for at least two consecutive days, and the nighttime low — measured from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. the following morning — is expected to hit 25 C or above on at least one of those nights.

However, the threshold is higher in special and metropolitan cities, cities with populations of 500,000 or more, and coastal and island areas, where the nighttime low must reach 26 C. On Jeju Island, the bar is set at 27 C.
