2 workers killed in separate accidents

The Yeosu branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor said Tuesday it had booked the chief executive of Hanwha Ocean Ecotech — a subsidiary of Hanwha Ocean, formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding — along with the heads of partner companies on charges of violating the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

Hanwha Ocean Ecotech, a manufacturer of ship blocks and offshore plant equipment located in the Yulchon Industrial Complex in Gwangyang, was the site of two fatal accidents this year. On March 16, a worker from a partner company was crushed to death by a heavy object. On Jan. 29, another partner-company worker died of argon gas asphyxiation.

Authorities booked the chief executive of Hanwha Ocean Ecotech, the safety and health managers of two partner companies, and the corporate entities themselves on charges of violating the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Investigators are also examining whether the Serious Accidents Punishment Act was violated.
