A man in his 70s with dementia attacked his caregiver with a weapon and was taken into custody by police.

The Chungju Police Station in North Chungcheong Province arrested the man, identified only by his surname, on charges of aggravated assault and is investigating the case, Yonhap News Agency reported Monday.

The man is accused of wielding a weapon at his caregiver, a woman identified only as B, at an apartment in Chungju at around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, injuring her.

B sustained facial injuries and is receiving treatment at a hospital. Her condition is not life-threatening.

The man is believed to have carried out the attack after becoming convinced that B had stolen his money.

Officers who responded to a neighbor's report arrested him at the scene. After completing their initial investigation, police handed him over to his family and arranged for him to be hospitalized for treatment.
