South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched a review of its emergency response framework to protect South Korean nationals as Typhoon Bavi, the ninth named storm of the season, approaches Guam and Saipan.
The ministry convened a situation review meeting Friday, chaired by Yoo Byung-seok, director general of the Consular Safety Bureau, to assess the typhoon's movement and protection measures for South Koreans in the Guam and Saipan area.
Yoo called on staff to maintain round-the-clock communication between headquarters and local consular offices, closely track the typhoon's path, and take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of South Korean nationals in the region.
The ministry's sub-office in Hagåtña, which has jurisdiction over Guam and Saipan, is regularly sending safety notices to local residents, including evacuation information. The honorary consul in Saipan is also sharing real-time updates on the typhoon's track and weather conditions through group messaging channels as part of ongoing damage-prevention efforts.
The ministry said it will continue to monitor the situation and prepare necessary safety measures in response to forecasts that Typhoon Bavi could pass directly through Guam and Saipan this weekend.
