A dedicated task force for fast-tracking redevelopment and reconstruction projects will be formed, with zone-based supervisors for close oversight, a rapid-response system, and monthly meetings with the district mayor.
Mapo-gu District Mayor Yu Dong-gyun made a redevelopment and reconstruction task force his first official act after taking office Tuesday, signaling that urban renewal will be the top priority of his ninth-term administration.
The choice reflects Yu's determination to answer residents' long-standing calls for faster redevelopment and reconstruction and to place urban renewal at the center of district policy.
"As I walked through neighborhoods across Mapo, residents repeatedly told me how frustrated they were with the pace of redevelopment and reconstruction," Yu said. "Opening the ninth term with a push to fast-track these projects is a commitment to residents — to ease the fatigue caused by delays and let them feel real change in Mapo."
Mapo-gu currently has 61 urban renewal projects under way, but concerns have been raised that work scattered across different departments and projects has limited the district's ability to respond quickly and manage them systematically.
The task force, formed immediately upon approval of the first official act, will consolidate the fragmented management structure and oversee the full project pipeline. It will also work to resolve on-site difficulties and sources of conflict in order to accelerate progress.
The district will also introduce a zone-based supervisor system to provide close, field-centered oversight of each project site.
Yu plans to chair a regular monthly forum to communicate directly with project stakeholders — including association heads — covering permit-related requests, approaches to resolving resident disputes, and matters requiring cooperation from the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
For sites facing urgent issues such as collective complaints or project delays, Yu will also hold ad hoc meetings to provide swift mediation and problem-solving, ensuring that renewal projects proceed without disruption.
"We will push forward with fast and stable redevelopment and reconstruction by strengthening administrative support and on-site management at each project site and building a solid communication channel with residents," Yu said. "Drawing on my experience with the Urban Planning and Management Committee during my time as a Seoul Metropolitan Assembly lawmaker, I will focus all of my efforts in the ninth term on ensuring these renewal projects are completed as quickly as possible."
