Artists and residents gather to cheer on small business owners
Hong Seo-beom, jazz ensemble 'Jazzpianist Jo Su-im and' among performers
The 2nd Mapo Mutual Growth Concert, connecting small business owners and local residents through the arts, was held Monday at Art Hall Maek inside Mapo Arts Center in Seoul.
Organized under the Seoul Metropolitan Government's private festival support project, the concert aimed to encourage small business owners struggling with prolonged economic stagnation and sluggish consumer spending, while giving residents a chance to enjoy culture in their daily lives.
The audience spanned generations, from children to middle-aged and older adults. Performances in dance, classical music, jazz, trot music, rock and lifestyle culture followed in succession, drawing sustained applause and cheers.
The opening ceremony featured remarks by Lee Seong-yong, chairman of the Mapo Cultural Heritage and Tourism Foundation, and a welcoming address by Byeon Jae-un, chairman of the Korea Culture, Arts and Sports Promotion Institute. Kim Hyeong-gon, executive vice president of Herald Media Group, and Nam Hae-seok, a Mapo-gu Assembly member, delivered congratulatory speeches wishing for mutual prosperity between the local community and small business owners.
Chundam Dance Company and Soul Friends opened the show. The young cast's bright, energetic dancing and singing captivated the audience and set the tone for the evening.
Soprano Lee Mun-gyeong shifted the mood with nuanced expressiveness and a rich vocal tone. The audience listened intently, sharing in the emotion the classical set conveyed.
Jazz ensemble "Jazzpianist Jo Su-im and" reinterpreted Cho Yong-pil's classic "Danbal Meori" as a jazz arrangement, drawing the audience into an exhilarating set. Pianist Jo Su-im led the group, joined by vibraphonist Baek Jin-u, vocalist Kim Hana, acoustic bassist Heo Jin-ho and drummer Seo Yong-gyu.
Trot singer Shin Seong-eun drew strong audience participation with powerful vocals and a lively stage presence, prompting waves of clapping and cheering from the seats.
Special performer Hong Seo-beom rounded out the program with familiar songs and a warm, playful stage manner that resonated across generations. His easy rapport with the audience added energy to the venue.
The closing act belonged to the Beka Dance Team from Mapo-gu. Composed of local residents, the team delivered a dynamic performance carrying a message of health and vitality.
The concert gained added significance from having professional artists, local arts organizations and community participant groups share the same stage to support the neighborhood. The blending of different genres and generations showed how culture and the arts can breathe new life into a community and open possibilities for mutual growth.
"We hope the residents and small business owners who came out were able to forget their troubles, even briefly, and enjoy a good time," the organizers said. "We will continue to create spaces where the community can draw strength together through culture and the arts."
