A man in his 50s has been arrested after bringing gasoline to a nursing home where his mother, who has dementia, was a resident and threatening staff.

The Cheongju Sangdang Police Station said it has booked the man, identified only as A, on charges of aggravated intimidation and is investigating him without detention.

A is accused of arriving at a nursing home in Cheongju at around 8:25 a.m. on June 26 with gasoline and threatening to set himself on fire in front of staff.

He is believed to have acted in a fit of rage after his mother, who has dementia, called him to say the facility was not feeding her.

However, A was carrying a plastic container of gasoline and a lighter but did not attempt to start a fire.

An arrest warrant sought by police was rejected by prosecutors on the grounds that A posed no flight risk.
