Free bottled water available at rest shelter for delivery riders, couriers and designated drivers through late September; facility also offers air conditioning, massage chairs and labor welfare services
Gwangjin-gu is distributing free bottled water at its mobile workers' rest shelter to protect the health of mobile workers and improve their working conditions during the summer heat.
As climate change drives up the number of extreme heat days, health management for outdoor workers has become increasingly important. Delivery riders, couriers, designated drivers and other mobile workers are particularly vulnerable, as the nature of their jobs keeps them outside for long hours with little access to fixed rest spaces.
In response, the district has stocked the Gwangjin-gu Mobile Workers' Rest Shelter — located on the third floor of The Podium 830 at 212 Achasan-ro — with bottled water available free of charge.
The giveaway runs through late September as part of the district's heat-wave response period. Shelter users may help themselves to chilled water from the refrigerator at any time during operating hours.
The shelter is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. to ensure mobile workers have a place to rest. Inside, amenities include air conditioning and heating, a hot and cold water dispenser, massage chairs, an automated blood pressure monitor and mobile phone chargers — giving workers a place to recharge between jobs.
The district also operates the shelter as a labor welfare information hub, not merely a rest space. Users can receive free labor consultations through the Gwangjin-gu Labor Welfare Center, as well as guidance on labor law education, cultural welfare programs and rights-protection support.
The district plans to continue identifying and pursuing field-centered support projects to improve mobile workers' working conditions and ensure a safer work environment.
"Mobile workers play a vital role for residents and the community, moving through the streets even in sweltering weather," district mayor Kim Gyeong-ho said. "We will continue to provide practical support so that mobile workers can do their jobs in a safer and healthier environment."
