Show blends traditional calligraphy, seal engraving and modern lettering arts

The Korea Minting and Security Printing Corp.'s Currency Museum is presenting a fusion art exhibition that brings together traditional calligraphy and contemporary sculptural aesthetics.

The state-run minting company announced Tuesday that its Currency Museum in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, is hosting a solo show by artist Shin Kyung-hwa titled "Encountering the Grain on an Emptied Path," running through July 12 in the museum's special exhibition hall.

The exhibition features works that blend traditional calligraphy with seal engraving, sculpture and lettering arts to explore how people forge their own character through life's trials and hardships. Working across flat and three-dimensional forms, Shin uses visual language to express narratives of adversity, growth, emptiness and healing through varied sculptural aesthetics.

A particular highlight is the way traditional character-based art expands into new territory through its encounter with contemporary media. The exhibition also captures the artist's inquiry into how traditional art can communicate in everyday life — through a calligraphy font she developed herself, called "Mom Calligraphy," and a character named "Meokgu" inspired by the traditional Korean Sapsalgae dog breed.

"I hope this exhibition gives visitors a moment to pause amid their busy lives and find their own grain," Korea Minting Corp. President Seong Chang-hun said. "I invite everyone to feel the meaning of life and the value of healing through works where tradition and modernity come together."

Meanwhile, the minting corporation offers free use of the Currency Museum's special exhibition hall to local artists and supports exhibitions and promotional activities as part of its efforts to invigorate the regional cultural arts scene.
