34 bridges in Ulju-gun and beyond get new names
Updates reflected in navigation apps to end mix-ups
Ulsan city has completed the renaming and official designation of 34 local bridges that shared similar or duplicate names, a move aimed at preventing misdirected emergency responses and strengthening initial reaction in disaster situations.
Four bridges in Dusan-ri and Cheokgwa-ri, Beomeo-eup, Ulju-gun — all previously called "Cheokgwagyo" — were renamed in positional order: Cheokgwagyo, Cheokgwa 1-gyo, Cheokgwa 2-gyo and Cheokgwa 3-gyo.
Three bridges formerly known as Namchang 1, 2 and 3 — whose names overlapped with Namchang 1 and 2 bridges on National Route 14 — were renamed after the nearby Onggi-jonggi Market: Onggi-jonggi 1-gyo, Onggi-jonggi 2-gyo and Onggi-jonggi 3-gyo.
In addition, Jaejeon Bridge in Jungsan-dong, Buk-gu was renamed Jungbo Bridge; Hyomun 2 Bridge in Hyomun-dong, Buk-gu was renamed Hyosung Bridge; and Yeonam Bridge in Jinjang-dong, Buk-gu was renamed Hyomunyeok Bridge.
In January, the city finalized names for four Myeongchon underpasses connected to the industrial road running through Samsan-dong in Nam-gu and Myeongchon-dong in Buk-gu. Reflecting the surrounding road network and geographic features, they were designated — in order — Myeongchon Gangnam Underpass, Myeongchon Mainline Underpass, Myeongchon Gangbuk Underpass and Myeongchon Industrial Underpass, and facility signage was replaced accordingly.
Ulsan city has also updated the new names across major portal map services and private vehicle navigation systems.
The city said the renaming project will help people pinpoint locations intuitively in emergencies. It also expects the Onggi-jonggi bridges to serve as a natural promotional vehicle for Onggi-jonggi Market, one of the region's representative traditional markets.
