Camp Page, which served as a US military base for decades, has been redeveloped into a green recreational space since American forces departed, with part of the site opening to the public Monday.
The city of Chuncheon has been developing a climate-response urban forest on the former Camp Page site at 127-1 Geunhwa-dong.
With construction on Zone 3 of the climate-response urban forest now complete, the city set Monday as the opening date for public access.
Chuncheon plans to finish work on Zones 1 and 2 by the end of this year and fully open the entire climate-response urban forest on the former Camp Page site in the first quarter of 2027.
Zone 3 covers part of the total 12.5-hectare development site and has been built as a green urban retreat featuring landscaping, rest facilities and paved pathways.
The city has also completed installation and operational checks of lighting fixtures and security CCTV cameras so residents can use the space safely at night. The aim is to provide a secure green space where people can enjoy walks and relaxation both day and night.
With Zone 3 now complete and open, Chuncheon says it will accelerate work on the remaining sections of the project.
The climate-response urban forest is designed to expand green space within the city and help counter the effects of climate change, including heat waves, fine dust and the urban heat island effect. Once the forest is complete, the city expects it will give residents more places to rest and help ease the urban heat island effect and improve the overall living environment.
