Omar Abdulkadir Artan, a 34-year-old Somali referee who had been set to officiate at the 2026 North America World Cup, was deported from the United States and removed from FIFA's referee list — but FIFA has decided to pay him his full allowance.

Reuters, citing sources, reported Sunday that FIFA decided to pay Artan despite his not participating in the tournament.

The exact amount has not been disclosed, but British tabloid The Sun has estimated World Cup referee earnings at up to 75,000 pounds (approximately 152.41 million won, or $100,000).

Referees are not told in advance how much they will receive, and payment is understood to be made after the tournament concludes.

Artan had been poised to become the first Somali referee at a World Cup, but US Customs and Border Protection denied him entry, citing alleged ties to "suspected terrorist organizations." FIFA stripped him of his referee credentials after he was unable to enter the country.

Artan ultimately returned home, where he was greeted by large crowds. He wrote on social media, "Thank you to everyone around the world for sending your love." He also vowed to officiate at the 2030 World Cup.

Named the Confederation of African Football's best male referee last year, Artan has since received an offer from UEFA to officiate the UEFA Super Cup match between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa on Aug. 12.

A total of 52 referees will take part in this World Cup, covering a record 104 matches — two per referee.
