Busan city will restrict traffic through Busan Tunnel — running from Yeongju-dong in Jung-gu to Daesin-dong in Seo-gu — from June 22 to Aug. 28 as crews replace power lines to improve the tunnel's fire resistance, the city announced Monday.

The project involves replacing existing power lines with fire-resistant cables designed to slow the spread of flames along electrical lines in the event of a fire, buying more time for evacuation. The city's Construction Safety Testing Institute electrical team will oversee the work, with Beoma Electric Co. serving as the contractor.

The inbound lanes running from Yeongju-dong toward Daesin-dong will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night to avoid peak commuting hours. Weekends and public holidays are exempt from the restrictions.

During construction, both inbound lanes will be fully closed. To minimize disruption, the city plans to convert the two outbound lanes into a single bidirectional alternating-traffic corridor.

Jin Bong-sang, director of the city's Construction Safety Testing Institute, urged residents to cooperate with the traffic controls and said the city would work to complete the project safely and quickly to shorten the restriction period.
