Signal activated June 2; official opening ceremony held with residents on June 12 — Crosswalk delayed four years finally installed after District Mayor Choi pressed Seoul Metropolitan Government — Walking route between district office annex and Yeongdeungpo Post Office dramatically shortened, boosting pedestrian safety and convenience
Yeongdeungpo-gu completed the long-awaited installation of a crosswalk on Gukhoe-daero near the district office annex ahead of schedule, holding an opening ceremony with local residents on June 12.
The new crosswalk spans the stretch between the Yeongdeungpo District Office annex and the former Dongyang Tower building (543 Gukhoe-daero). The surrounding area — a roughly 400-meter corridor running from the Gyeongin Expressway entrance intersection to the Yeongdeungpo District Office intersection — had long lacked a crosswalk, forcing residents and mobility-impaired pedestrians to take lengthy detours.
The crosswalk had originally been planned as part of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's project to build an underground roadway beneath Gukhoe-daero and convert the surface into a park. A prerequisite Korea Electric Power Corp. underground cabling project fell roughly four years behind schedule, stalling the crosswalk installation along with it.
In response, the district office repeatedly urged the Seoul Metropolitan Government to prioritize the crosswalk, citing the urgency of residents' inconvenience. District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon personally pressed for early installation during a meeting with city officials in March, which accelerated the project. Construction began April 27 and finished ahead of the original timeline.
The district activated the crosswalk signal at 4 p.m. on June 2, giving residents immediate pedestrian access. At the official opening ceremony on June 12, District Mayor Choi and residents of Dangsan-dong crossed the new crosswalk together to mark the occasion.
"We used to have to walk hundreds of meters out of our way just to get to the other side," one resident at the ceremony said. "Now that the crosswalk is here, it's so much safer and more convenient."
The new crosswalk dramatically shortens the walking route for residents using the district office annex and Seoul Subway Line 2 stations in the area.
The district also expects the crosswalk to reduce jaywalking risks and improve pedestrian access, benefiting traffic safety for nearby workers and residents while helping to revitalize local businesses.
"The early opening of this crosswalk on Gukhoe-daero is a meaningful achievement that resolves a long-standing inconvenience for our residents," District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon said. "I hope this new crosswalk will serve as a safe and convenient passage for everyone in the community."
