The sensation of shifting gears — long assumed to be a casualty of the electric vehicle era — is emerging as a new competitive battleground in the high-performance EV segment. Hyundai Motor Co's virtual gear-shift technology, applied to the Ioniq 5 N, has drawn wide praise for delivering a driving experience that rivals, and in some ways surpasses, that of internal combustion engines. Now, global performance brands are taking notes.

According to foreign media and industry sources Wednesday, Porsche is considering adopting Hyundai Motor's virtual gear-shift technology. Porsche spokesperson Ben Weinberger, in an interview with automotive outlet CarSales late last month, called the technology "something we are looking at with great interest," adding, "It's very interesting. Honestly, Hyundai did a really good job."

The technology Weinberger was referring to is N e-Shift, which Hyundai Motor has applied to the Ioniq 5 N and Ioniq 6 N. It is a software-driven feature that replicates the feel and sound of gear changes in an electric vehicle that has no physical multi-speed transmission. Drivers can use paddle shifters behind the steering wheel to experience simulated upshifts and downshifts.

The system works by artificially limiting motor revs, momentarily cutting power output, and generating interior and exterior sounds calibrated to virtual engine speed and gear position — creating a sensation closely resembling the dual-clutch transmission of a high-performance combustion engine. Afterfire and burbling sounds when the driver lifts off the accelerator, along with a sharp "bang" at the moment of an upshift under hard acceleration, deepen the sense of immersion. Shift logic also varies by driving mode, giving drivers a different feel and sound depending on the situation.

Electric vehicles typically use a single fixed-ratio reducer, which means they produce none of the shift shock or engine-speed variation found in combustion-engine cars. Instant, full torque from a standstill is a clear advantage, but some drivers find the experience lacking in tactile feedback and engagement as speed builds.

Hyundai Motor targeted exactly that gap. Rather than simply chasing faster acceleration figures, the company focused on making drivers feel they are actively interacting with the vehicle.

Early reactions were skeptical — some dismissed it as a "fake gear shift." But the mood shifted after the Ioniq 5 N went on sale. International automotive media and drivers alike praised the car for bringing genuine driving fun to an electric vehicle, and several brands, including Porsche, have since publicly expressed interest.

The Ioniq 5 N, launched in 2023, was the first dedicated electric vehicle from Hyundai Motor's high-performance N brand. It distills performance electrification technology developed through motorsport programs, including the World Rally Championship, and validated on Hyundai's "rolling lab" test program. The car was designed not merely to be fast, but to deliver track-ready performance and driving engagement at the same time. N e-Shift is a product of that philosophy — widely regarded as a defining feature of the electric age that keeps drivers actively connected to the machine.

Porsche is now weighing whether to adopt the technology. Weinberger said no decision has been made, but added, "If we do it, it will be a Porsche solution." Industry observers have raised the possibility that Porsche could apply a similar feature to future electric versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman.

Should Porsche develop its own virtual gear-shift system and accompanying sound design, analysts say it could reinterpret the brand's signature flat-six engine note in an electric context while recreating the shift feel that defined its sports cars. Michael Hedtwick, the complete vehicle manager for the Porsche Cayenne Electric, also left the door open, saying the company would "listen to what customers want" regarding the possibility of adding a virtual gear-shift function to its latest electric models.

Porsche is not alone in its interest. BMW is reportedly planning to incorporate its own virtual gear-shift function into next-generation electric M models. Ferrari is also said to be exploring the use of paddles in its electric vehicles to adjust regenerative braking and torque delivery. The approaches differ, but all share the same underlying ambition: restoring the sense that the driver is truly in control of a high-performance electric car.

"The Ioniq 5 N was the first case where Hyundai Motor demonstrated that driving fun is achievable in an electric vehicle," an industry official said. "In the past, Porsche, Ferrari and BMW M set the benchmark for performance cars. In the EV era, traditional sports car brands are now looking to Hyundai Motor for answers." Hyundai Motor has continued to build its credentials in the global high-performance EV market: the Ioniq 5 N was named World Performance Car of the Year at the 2024 World Car Awards, and the Ioniq 6 N repeated the feat when it appeared on the winners list in April.
