Busan city government is accepting nominations for the 42nd Pride Citizen Award from Wednesday through July 24.

Established in 1985, the Pride Citizen Award is Busan's most prestigious civic honor, recognizing residents who have brought distinction to the city or dedicated themselves to helping those in need. A total of 270 people have received the award to date.

Each year, the city selects up to seven recipients across four categories — a grand prize and divisional awards for civic dedication, volunteer service and self-sacrifice — with each division offering a top prize and an encouragement prize. Eligible nominees must have a clear record of achievement in one of the three divisional categories, have lived in Busan for at least three years, and must not be disqualified from receiving public commendations.

Nominations may be submitted by district mayors, heads of institutions based in Busan, leaders of civic, social or professional organizations or businesses, or by a joint petition signed by at least 20 residents. Nomination forms and supporting documents must be submitted to the city's autonomous administration division by July 24, either by mail, in person or by email at movie0524@korea.kr.

The city will conduct field investigations on all nominees through mid-September and convene a review committee of specialists in each category before selecting the final recipients. The awards will be presented by the Busan mayor at the Busan Citizens' Day ceremony in early October.

Meanwhile, last year's awards went to seven recipients: one grand prize winner, two in the civic dedication category (one top prize, one encouragement prize), three in volunteer service (one top prize, two encouragement prizes) and one in self-sacrifice (top prize). The grand prize went to Park In-ho, head of the Citizens' Association for Busan Port, in recognition of his contributions to South Korea's maritime development, including the establishment of the Busan Port Authority and the reinstatement of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
