Daegu Mayor-elect Choo Kyung-ho said Tuesday that he would make safety the top priority of his administration.

Choo made the remarks after receiving a briefing on disaster safety from his transition committee, saying "the foremost priority in city governance must be securing the safety of citizens against disasters."

The Daegu Fire and Safety Headquarters briefed the committee on prevention-focused safety management and improvements to fire safety infrastructure, while the city's disaster safety office outlined measures to prevent serious accidents and preparations for the summer flood season.

In response, Choo urged officials to approach safety inspections with the mindset that "there is no such thing as over-preparation." He said swift response when disasters strike is important, but prevention matters most.

He also called on departments to maintain seamless inter-agency coordination and emergency communication networks as the rainy season approaches, and to thoroughly verify that flood-control equipment — including water pumps and pumping stations — is fully operational so the city can respond quickly when disaster hits.

Choo said the safety of firefighters who risk their lives battling blazes and carrying out rescues is equally important, pledging to provide maximum support for their protection within the limits of the budget.
