The Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education announced Tuesday it will hold the first Student Smoking and Harmful Drug Prevention Content Contest to promote a healthier school environment and raise awareness among youth about the dangers of smoking and drug use.

The contest will focus on three themes — the seriousness and harm of smoking and harmful drugs, public awareness campaigns for prevention, and building drug-free schools — and will accept entries in three categories: posters, character designs and short-form videos.

Submissions are open through July 24 to elementary, middle and high school students enrolled in Daegu schools, as well as young people of the same age group who reside in the city.

Participants may submit their work to their school or to the district education support office with jurisdiction over their place of residence.

Judging will take place in two rounds: a preliminary round conducted by each district education support office, followed by a final round held by the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education.

Awards will be given by category and school level, with one top prize, two excellence prizes and three encouragement prizes selected in each division. Winners will receive a commendation from the Daegu superintendent of education along with gift vouchers.

Final results are scheduled to be announced in September.

Daegu Superintendent of Education Kang Eun-hee said the contest is designed to let students naturally recognize and understand the risks of smoking and harmful drugs by taking part in creating the content themselves.
