New left-turn and U-turn lanes opened April 24, easing long-standing traffic delays and resident complaints at the Hyeongchungwon intersection
Dongjak-gu has installed new left-turn and U-turn lanes along with traffic signals in front of Han River Hyundai Apartment at 151 Hyeongchungno, with the stretch officially opening April 24, the district said.
The Hyeongchungwon intersection — on the approach toward Heukseok-dong — had seen worsening congestion and difficulty for U-turning vehicles, driven by the addition of a right-turn lane and a steady rise in traffic entering Heukseok-dong.
The fragmented signal system forced nearby residents to take lengthy detours, generating persistent complaints about traffic inconvenience.
In response, the district pushed ahead with the left-turn installation in front of Han River Hyundai Apartment to improve traffic flow and ease chronic congestion at the U-turn section near the national cemetery. After clearing a traffic safety facility review by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency in October 2024, construction broke ground in March and the lane opened April 24.
Since the opening, left-turn traffic in front of Han River Hyundai Apartment has moved more smoothly, and detour traffic along Hyeongchungno has dropped markedly.
The district also synchronized the new signal with a nearby crosswalk signal to prevent cascading congestion from the new left turn, improving overall traffic flow along Hyeongchungno.
The district said it plans to continue monitoring real-time traffic conditions and signal synchronization in the Hyeongchungno area and take steps to prevent sudden bottlenecks, ensuring uninterrupted vehicle flow.
