Jo Sang-ho, the Democratic Party of Korea candidate who won the Sejong mayoral race, receives congratulatory flower garlands from supporters at his campaign office on Wednesday.

Jo Sang-ho, the Democratic Party of Korea's mayor-elect of Sejong, said Wednesday he would "fully honor the weighty mandate of citizens to complete Sejong as the administrative capital."

Jo said the election result was "not simply a personal victory" but "a solemn order from citizens to join forces with the capable Lee Jae Myung administration and usher in an era of popular sovereignty." He added that he would "stand at the very front to open Sejong's future" by working toward both administrative capital status and a self-sufficient city.

Addressing residents directly, Jo said completing Sejong as the administrative capital and building a self-sufficient city were goals the city "must pursue — Sejong's survival depends on it, and so does the future of South Korea." He pledged to lead the effort himself, working alongside citizens to build a new future for the city.
