Amid the detention of Kim Se-eui, head of the YouTube channel Gaseyon, on charges of spreading false information about actor Kim Soo-hyun, Kim Soo-hyun's legal team is pushing strongly for the channel's permanent removal.
Ko Sang-rok, an attorney at law firm Pil representing Kim Soo-hyun, said Sunday on social media that "unless the channel itself is permanently deleted, the criminal structure can be repeated at any time," calling for Gaseyon's permanent shutdown.
Ko said that even though Kim Se-eui has been detained, other cast members of the channel could continue broadcasting and carry on the same pattern of incitement and attacks.
Ko particularly criticized Gaseyon for spending the past seven years spreading false information rooted in hate and incitement while collecting large donations and advertising revenue.
He said the channel had victimized a number of public figures, including Kim Gun-mo, Han Ye-seul, Lee Sun-kyun, Park Soo-hong and Tzuyang.
He said "the very fact that a channel like Gaseyon has been allowed to operate on a platform for years while generating profit is a serious failure of society and the platform system."
Ko added that "permanently deleting the Gaseyon channel is not a matter of choice but the minimum measure required for public safety," and that "this case involving Kim Soo-hyun must serve as a turning point to show that society will no longer tolerate repeated cyber-wrecker crimes and character assassination."
Meanwhile, the court on Tuesday rejected Kim Se-eui's request for a review of his detention after he argued that his arrest was leading to defamation of the late Kim Sae-ron and demanded his release.
Kim Se-eui faces charges of spreading claims through YouTube and other channels that Kim Soo-hyun had dated the late Kim Sae-ron when she was a minor, and that pressure from Kim Soo-hyun's side to repay debts contributed to her death. He also faces charges of using AI to manipulate Kim Sae-ron's voice to fabricate statements — including that she had first had sexual relations with Kim Soo-hyun during winter break of her second year of middle school — to damage Kim Soo-hyun's reputation.
