People Power Party campaign chief calls on citizens to cast their ballots; remark about stamp impression seen as jab at President Lee's ballot-exposure controversy
Jang Dong-hyeok, standing chairman of the People Power Party's central election campaign committee, cast his ballot Wednesday in his own constituency on the day of the June 3 local elections.
After voting at a polling station set up at Daecheon Girls' High School in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province, Jang spoke to reporters and urged citizens to participate. "These local elections are truly important. Please make sure to go to the polls on Wednesday, June 3, and cast your precious vote," he said. "Voting can change things."
Jang also told reporters that "the stamp pressed down really nicely" when he voted, adding that people should "feel free to vote comfortably." The remark was widely interpreted as a dig at President Lee Jae-myung over a controversy that arose during early voting last weekend, when he was accused of exposing his ballot.
After casting his vote, Jang was set to head to the National Assembly to chair the final meeting of the central campaign committee and encourage voter turnout.
