On-site inspections covering 412 mid-size buildings, 140 large buildings and 104 public open spaces run through July 1; violations including unauthorized extensions, change of use and parking facility mismanagement to face strict administrative action
Seoul's Seongdong-gu district will conduct intensive safety inspections of mid- and large-scale buildings and public open spaces across the area.
The month-long inspection runs from June 1 through July 1. The district aims to systematically assess the maintenance and management of the targeted facilities, reinforce compliance with building-related laws and prevent safety accidents to foster a safer urban environment.
A total of 656 sites are subject to inspection — 412 mid-size buildings with a total floor area of at least 2,000 square meters but under 10,000 square meters, 140 large buildings with a total floor area of 10,000 square meters or more, and 104 public open spaces. Civil servants will visit each site in person to conduct a comprehensive review of facility maintenance conditions.
Inspectors will focus on three areas: whether buildings have been illegally extended or had their designated use changed in violation of the Building Act; whether attached parking facilities comply with the Parking Lot Act; and the management and usage conditions of public open spaces.
Where violations are confirmed, the district plans to issue correction orders and, where necessary, file criminal complaints and take other strong administrative measures.
"Mid- and large-scale buildings and public open spaces significantly affect residents' safety and the city's appearance," a district official said. "We will work to prevent safety accidents through continuous on-site inspections and management, and to establish a sound building culture."
