District expands smart bus-stop shelters to 10 locations, equipped with climate control, air purification and Wi-Fi; 92 percent of users rate facilities positively in satisfaction survey
Jungnang-gu has installed a new smart shelter near the bus stop at Yongma Waterfall Park in Myeongmok-dong, bringing the total number of such facilities across the district to 10.
The shelters have been placed at locations with high foot traffic and heavy public transit use to improve convenience for residents.
Smart shelters are climate-controlled bus waiting spaces designed to let residents use public transportation comfortably and safely regardless of extreme cold or heat. They operate daily from 4 a.m. to midnight and are equipped with heating and cooling units, air purifiers, public Wi-Fi and digital information boards. All systems incorporate information and communications technology, allowing the district office to monitor and control them remotely.
Each shelter is also fitted with CCTV cameras and emergency call buttons linked to the district's integrated CCTV control center, enabling real-time situational monitoring and rapid response in emergencies.
Additional amenities include wired and wireless phone chargers, tables and chairs. The digital boards display real-time bus arrival information alongside district news and lifestyle updates.
In a satisfaction survey of 601 smart shelter users conducted in March, about 92 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with the facilities — 72 percent reported being "very satisfied" and 20 percent "satisfied." The most common uses were waiting for buses and seeking relief from extreme heat or cold, and many users described the shelters as "convenient and appreciated."
The district secured 500 million won (about $332,000) in special disaster safety grants this month and plans to install additional smart shelters, continuing its push to expand transit amenities that residents can directly benefit from.
"We hope the smart shelters become a comfortable place where bus riders can take a brief rest," a district official said.
